As sailors, we all know far too well that our sport requires wind and unfortunately Saturday’s forecast was not going to cooperate. However, Sunday was not going to disappoint with warm weather and some great racing!!! Some classes only elected to sail on Saturday so the Vipers, Laser Radials, and the new Melges 15 classes took to the race course for three races. Sailing in light air was all about finding the pressure. In the Viper fleet many lead changes occurred between Tyler Moore, Mark Wheeler, Peter Ill, and Henry Amthor. Tyler and Team Rooster took home the win, Mark and Peter tied going into the last race but the Vapor Trails team were able to edge out the competition to clinch second with a bullet in the last race!
In the Laser Radial fleet, HYC Junior Sailor Kyle Pfrang walked away with three bullets. Jak Kelly from Seaford Yacht Club took second and rounding out the top three was HYC’s Olivia Gilmore.
Perhaps one of the coolest sites on the course was to see a healthy fleet of Melges 15s. Similar to a Viper the boat is rigged with an asymmetrical spinnaker and is a blast to sail. HYC Junior Sailor Tyler Brown with crew Barret Wise chartered one of the Melges 15 for this weekend and finished each race in first place! Jon Mann and crew Alex Jacobs from NYCC finished second while Michael Peters and Joseph Morgan finished in third. Congrats to all!
