The Hampton Roads Race Team traveled to Annapolis Yacht Club for the infamous Halloween Howl Regatta. James Allgeier won the event winning six out of the nine races, finishing only once outside of the top three, where he finished fourth in race 9. Amelon Rule also sailed a great regatta winning race 3 and finishing third overall. Justinas Petkauskas finished fifth and Jackson Martin 23rd in the 32 boat fleet. We are very proud of these young sailors and congratulations to Coach Nathan Smith on coaching the team to success.

Benton Amthor and SUNY Team Win Oakcliff Grade 5 Match Race

Benton Amthor and SUNY Team Win

Past HRRT Opti Coach and HYC/FBYC junior sailing alumni Benton Amthor and his teammates from SUNY Maritime like many college sailors have been exploring new sailing opportunities since their regular season regattas have been cancelled. Amthor went to neighboring Oakcliff for a Grade 5 Match Race with many COVID safety protocols in place, similar to what HYC and other programs have instituted since the start of the pandemic. For their first time match racing the team focused on boat speed and making the correct maneuvers to cover their competition and the team of dinghy sailors pulled off the win against seven other teams. Oakcliff is a national sail training organization located in Oyster Bay, NY. The brain child of Hunt and Betsy Lawrence, Oakcliff is headed by executive director Dawn Riley and has become a premier training location for educational, one-design, offshore, and Olympic development programs.
