HYC Race Teams

Does your sailor have a passion for racing, advancing their sailing skills to a whole new level or want to see themselves on a college sailing team or even the Olympics? Well then your child should join our race team!

All of our sailors learn and practice sailboat racing skills. However, junior sailors can further develop their racing skills by joining the HYC Race Teams and competing in regattas at HYC, other yacht clubs around the Chesapeake Bay and beyond. You do not have to own your own boat to join our teams. Make sure your child joins the CBRYA Junior Membership and US Sailing to get discounts on regatta fees and other various discounts at retail stores.

NEW FOR 2018! HYC will be partnering with Norfolk Yacht and Country Club to provide our sailors with the best racing experience ever! HYC and NYCC will be joining forces to have one Opti Race Team and one c420 Race Team. We will be alternating practice weeks between HYC and NYCC to provide a better on the water experience. This means we will have better competition on the water, Opti and c420 Team Racing practices, decreased housing costs and more numbers to the trailering pool. All registration will go through Hampton Yacht Club’s Online Registration.

We will be hosting an informational meeting for both Opti and c420 Race Teams at Norfolk Yacht Club on May 22nd  at 6:30pm or Hampton Yacht Club on May 23rd at 6:30pm. They will be the same meeting, but allow both sides of the water ease of getting to one yacht club during rush hour traffic. Please attend!

Opti Race Teams

After sailors have gained some experience in the Intro to Opti Racing course, those sailors can advance onto our Chesapeake Opti Race Team or Opti Race Team and compete in the Green, White, Red and Blue fleets (Click Here for breakdown of fleet assignments).   A minimum of one season of Opti Level 1 training and Intro to Opti Racing is required. Team selection will be at the discretion of the Optimist Race Coach or Sailing Director.

The Chesapeake Race Team is a developmental race team for the sailors or for parents that only want their sailors to travel locally. That means they will still get the same expert coaching as the Opti Race Team, but the sailors will only travel to local smaller regattas to represent HYC or NYCC. Once the sailors have bridged the gap from Intro to Opti Racing and the Chesapeake Opti Race Team, they will be ready to compete in the national level and join the Opti Race Team.

Once the Opti Racers have reached the age of 15, over 140 lbs and/or over 5ft 5in these sailors now qualify to move onto the club 420. They can either take a Intro to c420 Racing course or just jump right into the c420 Race Team.

c420 Race Teams

HYC sponsors a club 420 Race team for the teenage members of our junior program.  The program requires some experience at regattas in the Summer Intro to 420 Racing class or Optimist Racing Team. The team focuses on serious racing skills and techniques including starting, strategy, tactics, spinnaker trim, trapezing and light and heavy weather sailing. HYC provides exceptional coaching and has a long term plan that will help your sailor advance in his or her sailing career. The Race team will have guest coaching appearances by Gary Bodie and Tyler Moore.

You may sign up as a team (skipper and crew) or individually. If you sign up as an individual, we will pair you up with someone that meets the competitive crew weight (260-270 pounds) and your skill set. We do have 4 new Zim c420s. These boats, with new sails, will only be used for regattas in order to meet quality race standards.

Regattas

Most regattas are scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays or during the week of July 4th and do require travel.   Parental involvement is expected for out-of-town regattas including: help getting boats loaded and unloaded, towing boat trailers and driving sailors and boats to and from regattas. Cost of gas for trailering, hotels for the race team, food during the regatta and regatta registration cost is not covered by the yacht club. If you are not able to help with towing or chaperoning, there will be an extra cost to help the parents that are towing boats, etc. The yacht club covers the cost of the Race Coach and powerboat gas during the regattas. Big regattas we travel to: Nationals, Junior Olympics, Orange Bowl, Buzzards Bay and Hyannis. The breakdown of costs of each regatta

HYC Annual Jr. Regatta is open to Radials, c420s and all Opti Fleets. To view 2016’s NOR, click here. To view 2017’s NOR, click here. This year, HYC will be hosting the Virginia Commonwealth Cup from August 9th-10th.

Note: We believe that in order to train successful sailors, junior sailors should train in an Optimist as long possible. Please help us with that goal by encouraging your child to sail an Optimist.  The Optimist is not only the largest sailing class in the world; it is the most competitive class for age 15 and below.
