Hampton University Student Choir Sings at 1944 HYC Flag Raising

Hampton Yacht Club and Hampton University have always had a good relationship. During World War II the U. S. Navy established a school for enlisted African American recruits who were trained in navy ratings such as Machinists Mates, Electricians Mates and Metal Smiths. This photograph, from the HYC archives, depicts a choir made up of these students singing at HYC Flag Raising in 1944. Submitted by James Shoemaker
