Two months ago if you asked me if there was going to be any junior regattas this summer, I would not have been able to give you an answer. However, as things have slowly reopened regattas have fortunately stayed on the schedule and the Hampton Yacht Club Teams and Hampton Roads Race Team were able to head to Deltaville for one of our favorite junior regattas at Fishing Bay this past weekend. Twenty-two sailors between all of our programs competed in Opti Greens, Opti RWB, Laser Radial, and c420 classes.

Kyle Pfrang Finishes 3rd in Radials

One of the highlights of the weekend was Kyle Pfrang’s third place finish in the 33 boat Laser Radial Fleet. This was Kyle’s first laser career event after coming out of Optis. He sailed very consistently in a variety of conditions. Way to go buddy!

The c420s had their work cut out for them competing against six very competitive travel teams from Annapolis Yacht Club that made up the sixteen boat fleet. Tyler Brown and Ellie Hasbrouck finished a very respectable 8th. These two found themselves many times rounding in second or third but it was not reflected in their score line. Sometimes great legs were lost to tactical errors. This is an area that they will continue to work on. The team accomplished their goals for the weekend and have the discipline to amend their errors. I’m also very proud of Dinghy Development Team Members Barritt Wise and Lauren Messerschmidt. This regatta was Barritt and Lauren’s first regatta and fourth day of sailing with a symmetrical spinnaker on the 420. The team handled the variation in conditions well and we hope they continue to strive towards success.

Will Chapman and Kieran Mason pictured with Greenies Coach Brian Fox sailed a great event. The Green Team provides excellent instruction on learning to race and highly encourages traveling to regattas! Kieran and Will both sailed a great event finishing in the top 10! Another step closer to entering RWB.

The Hampton Roads Race Team is a combined effort between Hampton Yacht Club and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club to develop boat handling, speed, and other racing skills to our top level Red, White, and Blue Optis. The team will spend four weeks training out of HYC with Coach Benton Amthor and then move to NYCC after the HYC Junior Annual to train with renowned international Opti Coach Scott Norman. The team had a great start to the summer season at the Fishing Bay Junior Annual placing four sailors in the top ten. Remember these names because this talent will continue to grow.
